Leadership Training Goes Virtual

How Cardinal Glass Pivoted to Digital Learning

The Opportunity

"Pre-pandemic we held live, in-person training in Minneapolis for our leaders. Having to pause the program during that critical time for leader development was challenging. This need led us on our search for a platform to launch our program online. JH saved the day! They met with us to understand our needs and special requests." says Alicia Hoover, Co-Director of Leadership Development for Cardinal IG.

Taking an in-person course and translating it to an online learning experience required research of existing platforms and understanding of the current goals to make this solution a success. After multiple meetings between JH and Cardinal Glass, it was determined that a custom online learning system was the best fit for the leadership team at Cardinal.

By building a custom administration system to manage content and a custom front-end experience, the Cardinal team would be able to have the things they liked from other course-based platforms and allow them the flexibility to customize things specific to their needs.

Back to School

There are two types of leaders at Cardinal, New Leaders, who are just beginning to become engrained in the "Cardinal way" of leadership and Veteran Leaders, who have taken the leadership courses and are helping other leaders or continuing to hone their own skills. Both new and veteran leaders would be accessing this new online learning system; either to take a course or to access a growing collection of leadership articles, videos, tips and tricks from around the entire organization.

The online Courses allow the leadership team to set up chapters and lessons that guide participants through the course with various activities along the way. A message board accompanies every lesson so that students can engage in conversation even though they may be located across the country from each other. Encouraging messages from the system congratulate students for completing lessons as they progress. Students can take personalized notes on each lesson which then can be printed or accessed after the course has ended.

All training is behind a login so that only registered users can access the course and resource information. Users can personalize their experience with a custom avatar and access their course notes and message board replies from their account. Additionally, leadership coordinators can access reporting for their plant's team members to check in on their progress and level of engagement with the course.

A Bright Future

"They helped us develop not only a new platform for our leaders, but a community to help bring us back together again. We will have almost 400 participants completing scheduled courses we have been able to offer on our new platform by the end of this year and we are adding users to the site daily to provide access to our available resources offered." says Hoover.
